Exotool's engine protected by US Patent 12,461,721
DOVER, Del., October 17, 2026 — Exotool, LLC today announced that the engine at the heart of Exotool, its platform for building full-stack progressive web apps from a diagram, is protected by United States Patent 12,461,721, System and methods for automated API determination, generation, and integration, granted on November 4, 2025 and exclusively licensed to Exotool.
The patent covers the method by which Exotool turns a single design, the diagram of an app's screens, data and behaviour, into a working application: the engine determines which parts of the behaviour run on the user's device and which on the server, generates both, and determines and generates the application programming interfaces between the two. A developer designs the app once; the division of labour between client and server, and the plumbing that connects them, are worked out and built by the engine, the same way every time.

The method has consequences beyond speed. Because the engine decides where each statement runs, the database of an Exotool app is reached only from the generated server side; the browser never holds a database key, which closes a class of data exposure common in applications whose browser side talks to the database directly. Because both sides come from one source, Exotool's visual debugger can follow a step of the program from the device to the server and back in one session. And because the generated source is handed to the developer, an Exotool app runs on a host of its owner's choice, with no runtime to license.
Exotool is available at www.exotool.com, with a free plan. Since October 2026 it is also listed in the Claude connector directory, so that an app can be built or changed by asking Claude, which edits the diagram while the patented engine builds the app.
